Nominate an individual (of any age) or organization for their work in building cultural bridges, we will honor the winner with a Humanitarian Award at the Big Read Gala/Author Event (see above). Reflecting on the theme of Dreamers of the Day, tell us in 250 words or less why you think a person or organization should receive the Big Read Humanitarian Award. Describe in as much detail as possible the activities this person/organization is involved in and why you believe they are deserving of this award. Forms and further instructions will be available here soon, and submissions will be accepted through March 19, 2010.
In the book, Rosie accompanies the main character, Agnes Shanklin, to Egypt. To accomodate Rosie, Agnes changes her hotel in Cairo. The new hotel is where Agnes meets Lawrence of Arabia and Winston Churchill and her great adventure begins. In 250 words or less, please tell why you think this person or agency should receive the Big Read Rosie Award. In Mary Doria Russell's Dreamers of the Day, Ohio school teacher, Agnes Shanklin, travels solo to Egypt where she meets a number of influential people, including T.E. Lawrence, Winston Churchill and Gertrude Bell. Imagine that you, too, have traveled from your home in Ohio to another time and place and are lucky enough to meet an extraordinary historical figure. Write a story about your meeting and conversation! Judges will be looking for well-told, historically accurate stories. Prizes!! 1st Place $100, 2nd Place $50, 3rd Place $25 Rules: • Open to teens grades 9-12 in the Greater Dayton area. • Entries should be typed and double-spaced. • Manga/Graphic stories will be considered, but the story will be judged, not the art. • 2000 word maximum. • Deadline for submissions is Friday, March 19, 2010.
